English Department (and adjacent) February Events and Opportunities

Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all the events and opportunities coming up. That’s why we’ve consolidated some of the most exciting events of February that you should attend!

Attend the Clint Smith & Patricia Smith Reading on February 12th!

Houston’s own inprint is hosting a reading featuring Clint Smith, discussing his poetry collection Above Ground, and Patricia Smith, discussing her poetry collection Unshuttered, at Zilkha Hall in the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The reading will be followed by a conversation facilitated by Houston Poet Laureate Aris Kian! You won’t want to miss it.

Submit to the Walter Isle Memorial Endowment!

The Walter Isle Memorial Endowment offers research and travel grants for summer research and writing projects addressing environmental and ecological topics! Awards typically range from $750.00 to $1,500.00 with applications are due no later than March 1, 2024 and notification of award by mid-April. Click here for more information!

Submit to the Minter Outstanding Essay Prize (for Juniors and Seniors) 

The Minter Outstanding Essay Prize of $2,000 is awarded for a paper of ten pages or more, written for an English course by a junior or senior English major. Submission are due by March 1st with prize awarded in April. More information can be found here!

Submit to Lady Geddes Essay Prize (for Freshman and Sophomores)

The Lady Geddes Essay Prize is an annual writing competition that rewards the best academic paper written for an English class  by a currently enrolled freshman or sophomore. The competition is not exclusive to English majors and submissions are due by March 1st. Find more information here!

Apply to the English Minter Summer Scholar Program

The English Minter Summer Scholar Program offers research and travel grants to English majors for summer research and creative writing projects typically between $750 to $2,500! Applications are due March 1st with notification no later than the second week in April. Check it out here!
